The Headstone Design Process: From Your Idea to the Final Tribute

Everything begins with a simple conversation. This is not a sales meeting. It is not about placing an order. It is about sharing stories.

Maybe you have a clear picture in your head of what you want. Or maybe you have no idea where to even start. Both are perfectly fine. The most beautiful designs often come not from a grand plan, but from small, simple memories.

All you need to bring to the conversation are your stories. Tell us about the person you are honoring. What was their personality like? What did they love to do? What made them smile? These memories are the real building blocks of a meaningful design. A memory about how he spent every Saturday fishing can become a small, etched fish on the stone. A story about her love for her rose garden can become a carved rose on the corner.

During our first talk, we will just listen. We will gently guide the conversation to cover a few key points, so we can start to form a picture together:

After our conversation, our designers take all those stories and ideas and turn them into something you can see. We create what is called a design proof.

A proof is a detailed, to-scale drawing of the future monument. It is a digital blueprint. It shows you exactly how everything will look: the placement of the names and dates, the font style, the size and location of any symbols or photos. You get a clear picture of how all the individual elements work together as a whole.

This is the most important thing to remember about this stage: the design is just on paper. The actual granite has not been touched. This proof is a tool for you to review and reflect. It is your chance to see the design with your own eyes and make sure it truly feels right before anything becomes permanent.

Once you have the design proof, the ball is in your court. This is the stage where your feedback turns a good design into the perfect one.

We encourage you to take your time with the proof. Look at every detail. Check every name and every date for spelling. Read the epitaph out loud. See how the placement of the images feels to you. This is the moment to make changes. Maybe the font for the name feels a little too small. Maybe you’d rather see the carved flower on the left side instead of the right.

Your thoughts and feelings are a vital part of the process. Please never feel like you are being picky or difficult. This is your tribute, and it needs to be perfect for you.

Based on your feedback, we will adjust the design and send you a new proof. We will repeat this process as many times as it takes. Our goal is simple: for you to look at the final design and feel a sense of peace and rightness. We will not move forward until you are completely happy and confident in the design.

The final approval is the last step in the design journey. It is the moment you tell us, "Yes, that is the one."

Once you are completely satisfied with the digital proof, you will give us your official, written approval. This is the signal for our craftsmen that the design is finalized and they can begin the careful work of engraving the stone.

This step is here to protect you and to give you peace of mind. By approving the final proof, you can be absolutely certain of what the finished memorial will look like. There will be no surprises, no misunderstandings. You will know that the tribute you have so carefully planned is exactly what will be created.

• How long does the design process usually take?

It varies for every family. Some families find a design they love right away, and the process takes just a day or two. Others might want to review a few different versions over a week or more. We move at your pace.

• Can I provide my own custom artwork or a specific drawing?

Yes, of course. We would be honored to incorporate your own artwork. If you have a specific drawing, a piece of handwriting, or a unique symbol you want to use, just share it with us.

• What if I'm not sure what I want to write for the epitaph? Can you help?

Finding the right words is often the hardest part. We can absolutely help. We can show you examples of different styles of epitaphs, or we can simply talk with you about your loved one and help you brainstorm ideas that feel authentic.

• Will the color of the granite on the proof look exactly like the real stone?

A digital screen can't perfectly capture the natural beauty and subtle variations of real granite. The proof will give you a very good idea of the color, but the final stone will have a depth and texture that a picture just cannot show. We can provide you with photos of finished memorials in different colors to help you see how they look in real life.
